“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” ~ W. B. Yeats
Have you ever attended an online class and caught yourself struggling to stay focused or even awake? Well, I must say: you are not alone. While online learning has become more and more popular, and we can’t deny its convenience, it doesn’t always make learning easier or better. When it comes to learning piano, it can sometimes feel even more frustrating, as some students find it harder to stay connected during online lessons.
One of the main challenges is engagement. In an in-person lesson, it is much easier to interact with your piano teacher and learn from that interaction immediately. Your teacher responds to what you play, and you adjust in real time. Online, this connection can feel weaker, especially if the lesson becomes more one-directional and loses its natural dynamism.
Distractions are another factor. At home, it is easy to lose focus. Work, family, notifications, or simply fatigue can interrupt your attention. This makes it harder to build discipline and concentration. Technical issues can also occur, although they are often the easiest problem to solve.
And then there is the gap between the lesson and your practice. You might understand everything during the lesson, but later, when you sit at the piano on your own, something is missing. You hesitate. You repeat without direction. Progress slows down.
The question is: can we fix this? Is it possible to learn piano through online lessons? The answer is yes. Online piano lessons can work very well, if you approach them in the right way.
The first step is to recognize your real challenges. Piano players need to be aware of their own routine and the factors that affect their discipline, focus, and engagement.
Take a moment to notice what is influencing your attention. Is it your environment? Your schedule? Your energy? Small adjustments can make a real difference. Creating a dedicated practice space, even a simple one, helps you stay more present. A consistent practice time also builds discipline over time.
Think about the changes you can make and benefit from. And for the ones you cannot change, adapt to them. You can.
Teachers can support this by making lessons more interactive, asking questions, encouraging discussion, and introducing activities that keep students engaged.
At the same time, students can take responsibility by creating a quiet study environment and maintaining a consistent routine. Asking questions, taking notes, and revisiting what was covered during the lesson all help reinforce learning.
Communication also plays a crucial role. Teachers should provide clear instructions and create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. It is a win-win.
This is often where things break down, and where the right support can make a real difference.
Clefer helps extend the lesson into your daily practice. It guides you through each piece step by step, responds to what you play, and suggests what to try next. Instead of guessing, you have a clear direction when you sit at the piano.
It feels like a conversation that keeps your practice engaging and aligned with your goals.
There is no single perfect way to learn piano.
Deciding what works best for you is not always easy. It is worth exploring your options and giving yourself the chance to try different approaches. Some students prefer in-person lessons. Others thrive with online piano classes. Many combine both.
What matters most is not the format, but how you engage with it.
Online learning is not perfect. You may feel disconnected or bored at times. In-person lessons can also be challenging, especially if you feel nervous playing in front of your teacher. But with a few adjustments, both can become far more effective and enjoyable.
