Composer spotlight: Eric Christian

Eric Christian brings a modern spirit to composing for piano, blending classical tradition with storytelling. Born Eric Christian von Fricken in Halfmoon, New York, in 1991, Eric began piano studies at age four. Music is part of his family heritage, as his ancestor Ernestine von Fricken was once engaged to Robert Schumann and inspired much of his music.

His creative voice was further shaped by his travels, especially his time in Paris, a city rich in musical history and home to composers such as Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, and Satie. Eric later studied Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music and found inspiration in both Romantic composers and contemporary film music. His experiences abroad, particularly in Paris, deepened his artistic voice and expanded his imagination. More than a composer, Eric is a storyteller, both in his music and in the way he shares it with the world.

We are delighted to welcome Eric’s music into Clefer with four of his original compositions. Players can each pieces step by step with the support of the Clefer Coach, making this contemporary repertoire accessible and rewarding to practice.

The Inspiration Behind the Music

Every piece tells a story. Eric draws inspiration from both everyday life and deeper human experiences. His music often combines romance, elegance, storytelling, and a touch of humor, creating pieces that feel both expressive and approachable. As a composer, he places great importance on melody and emotional depth. His work balances intimacy with refinement, and his devotion to musical notation is one of his defining strengths.

He believes in writing music down, not simply producing recordings, so that it can endure, be shared, and continue to live beyond a single moment.

As Eric says: “Music is meant to be shared, not shown.” His compositions carry that intention. Quiet moments, thoughtful gestures, and stories told through sound. By learning to play his music, students are not simply reproducing notes on a page. They are stepping into the creative world of a living composer and giving voice to something alive and human in today’s musical landscape.

Why We Love Eric

Classical repertoire forms the foundation of piano study, but adding the voices of living composers brings something unique. It opens a window into contemporary creativity and reminds us that piano playing is both a tradition and a living, evolving art. What we love about Eric’s music is how it manages to be both beautiful and accessible. He often says that he wants to write “beautiful music to listen to but that you can also play.” That balance is powerful, especially for today’s generation of piano players. It means learners can hear something moving and then discover that they can bring it to life themselves. This vision aligns naturally with Clefer. We share the belief that more people should have the opportunity to sit at the piano, connect with music, and experience the joy of playing pieces they may once have thought were out of reach.
